Universal Mardi Gras: The Most Awesome Family-Friendly Celebration!
Okay, friends, let me tell you something – if I could, I’d go to this every single night. Seriously!
As someone who’s completely head-over-heels for New Orleans, I truly believe experiencing Mardi Gras is a must-do for everyone at least once. And while NOLA does a fantastic job offering family-friendly fun, I get it if parents hesitate to bring their little ones during the main Mardi Gras or Carnival season. It can get a little… intense. But if you want your kids to enjoy a super cool, safe, and festive taste of Mardi Gras, you HAVE to check out the Universal Studios Orlando’s Mardi Gras celebration.
I’m a little embarrassed to admit I somehow missed the memo about Universal Mardi Gras: International Flavors of Carnaval! I didn’t realize Universal Studios has been bringing the iconic Big Easy party to Orlando since way back in 1995. From Feb. 1 to March 30, Universal Studios is transformed! You can catch a fantastic nightly Mardi Gras parade (more on that – it’s AMAZING), enjoy awesome live entertainment and concerts, and sample delicious food inspired by flavors from around the globe.
And trust me – as a former Florida resident who still lives in the wonderfully (and stickily!) hot South – this is a fantastic time to visit the parks. The weather is usually gorgeous! Daytime temperatures often reach the mid-70s to upper 70s, maybe even the low 80s, and then cool down to the 60s at night. You might see a bit of rain (it is Florida, after all!), but generally, the weather is glorious. Plus, it tends to be a less crowded time in Orlando, especially if you plan your visit during the week. Less waiting, more fun!
Here’s everything else you need to know about this awesome, family-friendly event.
Is Universal Mardi Gras Good for Families? Absolutely!
Yep, bring the whole gang! Universal Mardi Gras is for all ages.
“Our Mardi Gras celebration is for all ages! You can come during the day and taste the awesome food, and families will also be able to interact with performers prior to the parade,” Lora Sauls, assistant director of creative development and show direction at Universal Studios Orlando, tells Scary Mommy. “The parade is something you won’t want to miss, and there is even a special viewing area for our little viewers, so they can get loads of beads!”
I went with a friend (millennial moms, unite!), but I saw families with young children, multi-generational families with grandparents, and tweens and teens – everyone looked like they were having a blast.
The Parade is Absolutely Jaw-Dropping
The parade just blew me away. I’m convinced it’ll do the same for you. Sauls agrees: “My favorite part of Mardi Gras is seeing the parade! The floats, performers, lights, music, and beads make this Mardi Gras parade super special and fun.”
Before the parade even kicks off, the performers stroll along the route to get to their starting point, interacting with guests. When I visited, I watched them go out of their way to say hi to kids and make them feel extra special. So sweet!
People do start snagging their spots on the sidewalks pretty early, so keep that in mind. It’s nice to have a little breather after a long day at the park. Bring a small fold-up blanket mat, spread it out, and give your feet a rest while you wait. Let the kids burn off some energy while you relax. And if you’re watching the parade from the sidelines (more on riding the floats later!), all you need to do is get ready to catch some beads!
The floats are honestly breathtaking. They’re so detailed, colorful, and HUGE. They’re designed and built in partnership with Kern Studios, the same folks who create the parade floats in New Orleans, so they feel incredibly authentic. I loved them all, but King Gator was definitely my fave!
And while the floats are incredible, the performers might just steal the show. They are all so talented (HOW are they dancing on stilts?!), friendly, and full of energy. You can’t help but get swept up in the excitement. And the confetti raining down? Just a perfect festive touch.
The Mardi Gras parade happens daily, but the time can vary depending on the date, so check the schedule when you arrive.
Want to Ride a Float? Here’s How!
Yep, you can actually ride on a float if you snag a spot in the Virtual Line. To do this, you’ll need to sign up and secure a Virtual Line return time on your Universal Studios Orlando Resort App. Keep in mind that space is limited, and there are no standby lines available, so you’ll need a bit of luck on your side!
If the parade gods are smiling on you and you get a spot, you’ll need to check in before the parade to get your float assignment, instructions, and get ready to roll!
Pro tip: Don’t underestimate how much energy it takes to throw beads! I was a bead-thrower on a Krewe of Boo float in New Orleans and had no idea how much work it would be. You’re constantly pulling and tossing beads. But there’s nothing like seeing the smiles on people’s faces when they catch one of your strands!
If you want to guarantee a spot as a bead thrower, you can purchase the Float Ride and Dine Experience (pricing starts at $89.99 per person, plus tax). This guarantees you a spot on a float, plus a delicious three-course meal before the parade.
Keep in mind that all float riders must be at least 18 years old unless accompanied by an adult, and must be at least 48” tall.
Don’t Forget the Amazing Food!
One thing I’ve said about Universal Studios before (and will say again!) is that their food is incredible. The chefs are so creative and put so much pride into making the food a key part of the experience. And Universal Mardi Gras is no exception.
During the celebration, the French Quarter Courtyard is bursting with food inspired by dishes from all over the world. You’ll find Cajun classics like gumbo, jambalaya, and beignets, plus new favorites like Hot Maple Lacquered Salmon from Canada (so good, I could eat it every night!) and Spicy Szechuan Chicken Bites from China. And, of course, there are festive cocktails to go with it all.
Live Music & Concerts Add to the Fun
Universal Studios is all about creating an immersive experience. During the parade, music fills the air. You can also head to the French Quarter Courtyard in the New York area to enjoy live music from Louisiana jazz and zydeco bands (a major highlight for me!). On select nights, you can catch a big live music concert on the Music Plaza Stage. We saw T-Pain – a core memory unlocked! Other performers have included Foster the People and TLC.
Word of warning: it can get crowded. Get there early if you want a spot up front (people were there hours before the concert started!).
The Best Part? It’s Included!
Here’s the best news: Universal Mardi Gras is included with your park admission or Annual Pass! So, while you need to purchase tickets to get into the park, you don’t have to spend extra to enjoy the Mardi Gras festivities, except for things like food, drinks, and souvenirs. Laissez les bons temps rouler!
