A Birthday to Remember

On January 10, 2025, the Flag Retreat Ceremony held special significance as it honored retired U.S. Army Colonel William “Bill” A. Connelly on his 100th birthday. Surrounded by family and fellow park guests, Col. Connelly stood proudly as the flag was lowered, folded, and presented to him—a gesture recognizing his remarkable service during World War II. Drafted at 18, Col. Connelly served with the 115th Regiment of the 29th Infantry Division, participating in pivotal events such as the D-Day landing at Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. His distinguished 27-year military career, primarily with the Counterintelligence Corps, earned him the Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone.

Each day, Magic Kingdom selects a veteran from among its visitors to participate in the Flag Retreat Ceremony. This honored guest assists in the flag-lowering process and receives a commemorative certificate and a special pin as tokens of appreciation. Veterans interested in this opportunity are encouraged to visit City Hall on Main Street, U.S.A., upon park opening to express their interest. Wearing military insignia or engaging with cast members can also increase the likelihood of selection. This unique experience allows veterans to be celebrated for their service in a memorable and meaningful way.
