The History of the Kennedy Space Center

In 1958, President Eisenhower signed a bill to establish NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration). Then in 1961, President Kennedy declared that America would land a man on the moon by 1970. Construction for the KSC (Kennedy Space Center) began soon after and it was completed in November 1963—just weeks before President Kennedy’s assassination. Since then, KSC has been an integral part of every major space exploration mission.

Today, KSC is home to some of the most advanced technology and systems ever created. It serves as a hub for research, engineering, assembly and operations related to human spaceflight activities. The center is also home to two vehicle assembly buildings (VABs), which are used to build spacecrafts like rockets and shuttles for launching into space. Additionally, KSC boasts several launch pads spread across its 140-square-mile campus—each with its own story to tell about past missions that have taken off from here.

What Visitors Can Expect

Visiting KSC is an experience like no other! From exploring one of the world’s tallest rocket launch pads to standing inside a massive VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building), visitors will get an up-close look at some of history’s most incredible feats of engineering and science! There are also interactive exhibits throughout the center where visitors can learn more about space exploration through hands-on activities or special presentations given by experts in various fields related to space technology. Plus, there are plenty of opportunities for souvenir shopping!
